Have a look at Stéphane’s stream on Instagram . You will discover his black and white textured photographs taken on the streets.

As usual, we asked Stéphane to tell us about the picture below as well as about his technique and influences.

“I always wonder what my photos will tell of their time when they will be seen (if they are!) in … 50 years?”

Stéphane

Instagram: @frommywindows

MY PICTURE

“This picture was taken in a public park in Paris called “Jardin des Batignolles” which is surrounded by construction sites. I was immediately attracted by the cranes situated in the background behind the skatepark : they graphically evoke in an almost elegant way the urban environment. The boy, with his hoodie and his cap, did the rest.”

MY TECHNICAL STUFF

“All the pictures I post on Instagram are taken with my iPhone, using Hipstamatic in 90% of cases. I use Snapseed for contrasts and lights in post-processing, but I never crop my pictures. I just sometimes remove the little white or black frame automatically generated by some Hipstamatic’s films. I also use “Cameramatic” to add texture. This particular picture was taken with the “Leme Cam” app (with the combo “Tilt Shift” camera and “Dark Forest” lens) even though I don’t use it a lot.”

MY INFLUENCES

“My very first “photographic revelation” was Robert Franck. Then it was Henri Cartier-Bresson who I had the chance to meet and with whom I discussed several times. I have also always been sensitive to the so-called ”Documentary photography” and the “Humanist photography”. This is why I always wonder what my photos will tell of their time when they will be seen (if they are!) in … 50 years? Recently, Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter made me seriously thinking in taking some colors pictures…”

MY PICTURE

“This picture was taken with the iPhone camera on an early sunny day in my hometown Karlsruhe/Germany. In this case it was a quick shot from the hip, not well considered. So too much light and the blurred person almost made me delete this picture, but the colors and the mood of the woman let me started with the edit.”

MY TECHNICAL STUFF

“I always start with Snapseed for cropping and the first steps like contrast, sharpen and so on. Then, for this picture, I used Kitcam for the color (superfade) and softness (ovaltilt) and at least Scratchcam for the texture. At the end Snapseed again.”

MY INFLUENCES

“I started on IG by chance with pictures of architecture, landscapes, flowers, then I came to minimalism. Finding a gallery with street let me started to make streetphotography.

I’m inspired from all the people on IG, the different point of view on their subject, the different kind of edits! I certainly have my favorit photographers there, and I always try to learn to make it better, not always successful.”

On March 23rd 2013 for the second consequential year The 24 Hour Project initiated by Renzo | @aliveinnyc and Sam | @whittiersam brought “together” photographers from all over the world to represent 35+ cities on the 5 continents.

Photographers were invited to document their city for 24 hour starting at midnight on Friday 22nd.
If this year the theme was Etni[city], photographers had as last year, no precise rule to follow except to post a photo per hour – taken the previous elapsed hour – on a photo social sharing network such as Instagram, EyeEm or Backspaces.

Meanwhile an amazing curation work was done by two great ladies Anna | @annacox and Gotham | @gk_too. Both kept posting photos tagged #24HR13 from all over the world in order to document the adventure on the 3 photo networks + Twitter almost in real time.

If for a photographer the project lasted 24 hours, for those 2 it was a story of no less than 38 hours. It started with the Australian photographers and ended up with the American west coast ones…

The largest gathering for the event undoubtedly occurred in Jakarta.
18 guys belonging to 2 different street photography groups -ISTRIE, Indonesian Street Mobile Photography and Streetbanditos- have met up to hit Jakarta streets together for 24 hours.

Prass | @prassprasetio, one of the photographers, made a video of their adventure. They clearly had an exhausting day but with so much fun: look at it, I bet you will smile if not laugh out loud.

Who would not love to share a photowalk with this amazing team?

MY TECHNICAL STUFF

“I took this photo with an iPhone 4S and only used Snapseed for post-processing.”

MY INFLUENCES

“I like street photography. My favorite photographers are Daido Moriyama and Ichiro Kojima. They are great photographers in Japan…”

Either black and white or color, Benjamin captures precious moments on the streets of San Francisco.

Benjamin tells us about this photograph as well as about both his technique and influences.

“My primary medium is writing, so I was really not a visual person at all until I started shooting on the iPhone almost 2 years ago.”

MY PICTURE

“People who live in San Francisco can appreciate that it’s usually quite cold and foggy by the beach. We get a few warm days in October, so we were out by the ocean with that beautiful, golden hour light. As I walked with my family, I noticed this man up ahead, who had so much story in his posture and presence. I managed to get one shot, and originally thought I would crop the girls out of the frame. When I checked my roll, I liked the contrast, having them in the shot.”

MY TECHNICAL STUFF

“This was taken on an iPhone 4S with ProCamera. With that app, I tend to manually lock exposure and focus. I didn’t do much processing. I sharpened it slightly in Filterstorm and then cropped it. Sometimes, I like to give the picture a little bit of room in the context of the IG feed, so I added some white space on the borders by adjusting the canvas size in Squaready.”

MY INFLUENCES

“You know, my primary medium is writing, so I was really not a visual person at all until I started shooting on the iPhone almost 2 years ago. But I am very interested in graphic novels, and how people tell stories with minimal line. Adrian Tomine and Charles Burns come to mind. Also, I am a bit of a film nut, stemming from my interest in graphic illustration– a couple of my favorite DP’s are Christopher Doyle and Roger Deakins. I believe they are also both still photographers, but I just know them from the films.”

Today, Orietta tells us about this incredible picture as well as about both her technique and influences in the field of photography.

MY PICTURE

“I took this photo at Fiumicino Airport (Rome) while waiting for my airplane to be called. I saw this quite big advertising light box for Chanel Nº5. As a graphic designer I was attracted by the simple bold black typography on one of it’s white plain sides. I was very lucky because a man with a cap and a cane stopped right in front of it. I took a couple of shots and decided that the one without the 5 would be less predictable and therefore maybe more interesting as a whole.”

MY TECHNICAL STUFF

“I shot this with an iPhone 4 using ProCamera. Then processed it with Snapseed to add some contrast and crop a touch of the man’s legs and a bit of the right side, in order that the silhouette would fill the whole of that angle. I wanted to divide the image into two clearly differentiated fields. ”

MY INFLUENCES

“I have always been influenced and very interested in the Bauhaus both in graphic design and in photography.”

From March 16 – 26, 2013, CS Gallery in Columbus, Ohio will play host to EXPOSURE: A Mobile Photography Exhibition, showcasing the work of 60 artists — local and global — whose diverse views and voices are expressed through mobile devices. This is the first major gallery exhibition dedicated solely to mobile photography featuring international artists in the Midwest U.S.

To harness the energy in the global mobile photography community, EXPOSURE will feature 300 photographs by emerging and acclaimed artists, including the 2013 Mobile Photography Awards’ Photographer of the Year, Sarah Jarrett. Each participating artist will display five images, in an 8-inch by 8-inch format. The visual consistency of new and seasoned artists displayed side-by-side emphasizes the collaborative and inclusive nature of the global mobile photography community.

Amy Leibrand, aka @_thisspace_ on Instagram is co-curating the exhibit with Daniel Colvin, owner of CS Gallery.

CS Gallery is made up of working artists and educators whose mission is to provide an opportunity for artists of all levels and genre to present, market, and sell their works. The gallery serves as an experimental space for innovative artists, and was featured in the We Are Juxt article, Emergence of Mobile Photography: Columbus

Do you like photography books? We hope so!

From time to time, we will review photo books. The purpose is not to do a deep analyze as you can easily find many long reviews on the web.

We just want to share our tastes with you especially when the book contains an interesting topic, good design and excellent print quality.

New retina displays offer an incredible image quality on the iPad and other devices, but what about the pleasure of touching the paper and smelling the ink?

In a world where a constant flow of images overwhelms us, and when you cannot stop looking at your cell phone, just take a break.

Sit in your sofa, grab a book and quietly enjoy the photographs. Take your time, breath, feel, yes just feel..

Today, we present “Guy Bourdin Polaroids”, published in 2009 by Editions Xavier Barral, an excellent french publisher.

This small sized book gathering erotic Polaroids made by Guy Bourdin in the 70′s is a concentrate of refinement.

98 mainly unpublished polaroids, 98 timeless images from one of the first fashion provocateurs whose singular way of seeing influenced contemporary photography, and continues to do so.

No text, just a foreword by Oliviero Toscani.

Printing is excellent. The slight spot varnish on the photographs and the minimalist layout reinforce the Polaroid sensation.

We have also appreciated the metallic cloth on hardcover which may evoke both fashion and film photography.

Beyond the charm that never fail to have these fragile small instant formats, we enter an emotional world blending sense of color, perfect framing and sensual elegance.

A fine tribute to this great photographer who, during his lifetime, flatly refused to exhibit or publish elsewhere than in the ephemeral pages of fashion magazines.

MY PICTURE

“This image was taken on a recent photo walk through the back streets of Kuala Lumpur. I love exploring new places with my camera, and I was hoping to capture some of the grittiness and mystery of the place and its people.”

MY TECHNICAL STUFF

“All my photos are taken with an iPhone4. This was taken using Pro Camera using the exposure control to deepen the shadows. I generally compose and crop first in Snapseed, lowering the contrast and saturation. I prefer to start this way and increase the saturation gently during the edit process. This shot was then edited in PhotoForge2 to add a Gaussian blur and noise. PS Express to use the Reduce Noise adjustment to smooth out the edges and try and achieve a soft focus feel. I often cycle between PhotoForge and PS Express a number of times with incremental changes and may end up using Blender to combine a couple of edits to get the right result. I am trying to stay close to my painterly instincts which does not mean I want the photo to look like a painting but more to achieve a feeling of depth, layers and hidden edges. On this image I finished up in Snapseed using the selective adjustment for brightness and saturation.”

MY INFLUENCES

“I have been painting in oils for a long time, and only recently re-discovered a love for photography. I don’t treat the two as distinct art forms, I enjoy both equally and allow each to influence the other. Most of my influences are from the painting world, such as Hopper, not only for his use of colour, but his exploration of public spaces as a theme in his work. One of my greatest influences is a little known Australian painter, Clarice Beckett, an early tonalist painter. Of course also there is Gerhard Richter and his wonderful photo paintings. I find now that my oil painting and photography is converging and I am getting huge inspiration from mobile photography – not just my own but the work of others. I have started to focus my painting on interpreting the images taken by other mobile photographers (with their consent) – the sources of inspiration here is very exciting.”
